Vision Issues Impacting Development & Learning: Birth to Five, PART 1
Presented by Alan Pearson, OD MEd PhD FCOVD at the Infant and Early Childhood Conference in May of 2018
Dr. Alan Pearson is talking about common vision issues in children and what conditions are likely to be missed by vision screenings. He is highlighting the importance of Eye Exams and gives suggestions for a better way of conducting a vision screening.
Many Vision Issues impacting a child's development and learning ideally should be found and addressed in the birth to five range. This presentation sorts out the important vision issues to screen for and the best age to find and refer. It discusses how important it is for professionals to share a common message when communicating to parents about the importance of vision in
development & learning, and how and when pediatric eye exams by optometrists or ophthalmologists are best completed. This is Part 1 of Dr. Pearson's presentation.
Dr. Stephanie explains how PLANO vision center is helping kids with functional vision issues. She also talks about the relationship between vision abilities and education. For more information visit: www.PlanoVision.org

Interview with Mercedes and Abby Mendoza. Mother Abby and daughter Mercedes Mendoza recollect the difficulty of school performance. Mercedes Teachers were convinced that she had behavior problems as opposed to vision issues. Finally in 6th grade Mercedes vision issues were identified and treated with Vision Therapy by Dr. Winters (Developmental Optometrist practicing in Yakima, WA).

Recently, Dr. E. Larry Jones presented Bill
1865 to the House of Representatives of the
the State of Washington. House bill 1865,
requires simply adding near testing to the
current eye examinations and standard vision
screenings.
As of the date of this
publication, HB 1865 passed the committee.
Dr. Jones is a practicing Optometrist with over
30 years of experience. He conducted a study
spanning 3 years examining approximately 300
children from ages 12 to 18 residing in a
juvenile detention center.
The findings were as follows:
- 80% had vision problems (a general farsightedness or
hyperopia) which wouldn't always
be detected on a "far test."
- 73% would have benefited greatly
from glasses or other visual
treatment.
Dr. Jones states that approximately 80% of a
child's learning comes through vision and the
old school analog world of yesterday and the
premise that the current testing is based on is
inadequate for our current digital age. The
current 20 foot testing is optical infinity for your
eyes and your eyes are at rest, but objects
inside of that distance require the eyes to
work. There are many studies that relate
juvenile delinquency and poor vision (also
recidivism rates declined dramatically when
youngsters had their vision problems
corrected).
A New York Times article published in January
2010 stated that children from ages 8 to 18
spend about seven and a half hours a day on a
smartphone, computer tablet or watching TV.
The current distance testing is already being
done so to add a near test would take only 10
more seconds per child and the cost would be
minimal.
He reports that he frequently hears positive
news of increasing grade reports and positive
attitude changes stemming from a simple
school referral. His hope is to help the kids that
could benefit from a simple test being
administered.
